Gynecology cancer screening tests

Cancer screening in women would include screening for

  • Breast cancer
  • Endometrial (uterine) cancer
  • Cancer of the vulva / vagina
  • Cancer of the cervix
  • Ovarian cancer

Routine physical and radiological examinations (the ultrasound scan) can be helpful in screening of breast, ovarian and endometrial cancers.

Routine Pap smears with HPV testing are tools for cervical cancer detection.

Various blood biochemical tumor markers like CA- 125, CA 19-9, HCV, BRCA1 & 2, AFP are also useful for gyn cancer detection.

Pap smear screening for cancer cervix

This is usually done between days 10-14 of the menstrual cycle (i. e. mid cycle)

Screening should start from the age of 21 years and repeated every 3 years

Usually liquid based cytology is used nowadays

If the Pap smear is abnormal we would usually advise further tests – like a colposcopy and a directed biopsy.
